Pir Syed Naseer-ud-Din Naseer of Golra Sharif passes away

Renowned religious and spiritual personality and custodian of Golra Sharif shrine, Allama Syed Pir Naseer-ud-Din Naseer Gillani, breathed his last on Friday around 2 pm on February 13, 2009 in Islamabad, Pakistan. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon. May Allah elevante his status.

Pir Naseeruddin Shah was from the family of the one of the great spiritual personalities of Pakistan, the grand Shaykh of Golra Sharif, Pir Sayyid Mehr ‘Ali Shah (may Allah have mercy on his soul). Also known as Pir of Golra Sharif. He was the son of late Hazrat Pir Syed Ghulam Muinuddin Gilani (may Allah have mercy on his soul) known as “Elder Lalajee”. A biography and the great work undertaken by the renowned Pir of Golra Sharif can be seen at http://www.golrasharif.com.pk/

Pir Sayyid Naseer-ud-Din Naseer Shah was a notable Islamic scholar, author, renowned poet orator and Sufi master. He has authored around 40 books on Islam, Quran and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) including Lafz-e-Allah ki Tahqiq, Quran Majid key Aadab-e Tilawat, Mawazna-e Ilm-o-Karamat, Kia Iblees Alim Tha, Pakistan men Zalzala ki Tabah Karian and Musalmano k Arooj-o Zawal ke Asbaab. Some of his books can be viewed at http://pirnaseer.sehamtech.com/.

Mysticism was his field of specialization with regard to research in history and religion. Pir Syed Naseer-ud-Din Naseer was against traditional mysticism and did not feel shy to criticise those who used mysticism as a means of gaining personal goals. He stressed that mysticism should be used as a practical moral and spiritual training for development of personality.

Pir Syed Naseer-ud-Din Naseer Gillani (may Allah increase his ranks) admired the late Shyakh Professor Hafiz Fatheh Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on his soul) due to the latter’s love for research and knowledge and true practice of mysticism. Pir Syed Naseer-ud-Din Naseer Shah visited Makkah Masjid and Al-Madinah Masjid in Leeds on many occasions during his visits to England.

Following the Friday Prayer at Makkah Mosque, Imam of the mosque, Hafiz Asim led a special supplication of ‘Isal al-Thawab for Pir Naseer-ud-Deen and prayed for his high ranks and special place in Paradise. Hafiz Asim paid tribute to Pir Sahib, saying that Pir Naseer-ud-din Nasser was a great sufi master and an intellectual who strived hard for reviving the ummah. His services for the cause of Islam and ahl-e- sunnah will long be remembered. Due to his sudden departure a deep void within the spiritual circles has been created. May Allah Almighty elevate the status of the departed soul and give patience to the family, friends and followers to bear this huge loss (Ameen).

Imam Hussain standing up for Freedom

A meeting was held at Leeds Makkh Masjid in memory of the second grandson of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Imam Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him) and all the martyrs of Karbala (May Allah be pleased with all of them).

The speakers expounded the noble reasons behind the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him). The martyrdom of Karbala is a reminder to people that one should fight against oppression and tyranny and help the cause of the oppressed.

The martyors of Karbala stood up for Truth, Justice, Equality, Freedom and Liberty. They chose the path of danger and hardships in order to preserve values such as liberty and freedom of expression.

Video and pictures of the tomb of Imam Husain in Masjid Al-Husain, Cairo, Egypt can be seen on hte following link:

http://www.makkahmasjid.co.uk/wp/index.php/2007/02/20/89/

The poet of the East, Sir Allahmah Muhammad Iqbal pays homage to Imam Hussain in the following words:
Imam Husayn uprooted despotism forever till the Day of Resurrection. He watered the dry garden of freedom with the surging wave of his blood, and indeed he awakened the sleeping Muslim nation. If Imam Husayn had aimed at acquiring a worldly empire, he would not have traveled the way he did (from Medina to Karbala). Husayn weltered in blood and dust for the sake of truth. Verily he, therefore, became the bed-rock (foundation) of the Muslim creed; la ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah).

The speakers also condemned Israel’s military campaign in the blockaded Gaza Strip and the loss of life on both sides. International community’s disregard for human suffering and lack of action to stop Israel massacring innocent civilians in Gaza was also said to be unacceptable. The speakers welcomed the UN Security Council Resolution and Britain’s role in promoting it but said that more had to be done to prevent the humanitarian crisis escalating. It was appalling that politicians, diplomats and journalists had not by and large openly condemned Israel’s abuse of human rights and targeting of Palestinian civilians and the infrastructure of normal life in Gaza.

The speakers also urged the International community to take action immeditely to remove the suffering of the people of Gaza and allow desperately needed humanitarian relief to reach them.

The Senator George Mitchell Centre for Peace & Conflict Resolution at Leeds Metropolitan University recenlty launched the new Institute for Spirituality, Religion & Public Life. The Institute aims to develop research, dialogue and practice focusing on the relationship between spirituality and faith with professional and public life.

The launch event explored how spirituality contributes to professional identity and to wider corporate, civic and global responsibility. In a round table discussion guests were invited to debate on how the different communities of faith can work together to enable dialogue and research in these areas, and how faith in all its aspects impacts on public life. The round table discussion was follwed by observations and comments by the panel. Imam Qari Asim of Leeds Makkah Mosque was one of the members of the panel. Imam Qari Asim commented that spirituailty is as important in public life as it is in one’s personal life. The more spiritual people are in a society, the more balanced, ethical and tolarent that society will be.

Imam of Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim, has been invited to be a Visting Fellow at Leeds Met University.

The Prince of Wales on Imam Qari Asim & Makkah Masjid

On 26 November 2008 HRH The Prince of Wales celebrated the achievements of talented British Muslims at an awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum. The Prince was joined by Princess Badiya bint El Hassan of Jordan at the first Mosaic Talent Awards, to mark the contribution made to society by British Muslims. Mosaic, a charity established by The Prince, offers mentoring schemes to raise the aspirations of disaffected young Muslims. The Prince appreciated the contribution of Muslim communities, and the talent therein, and said that it had “enriched Britain in every sense”.

The Prince also acknowledged the efforts of the Imam of Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim, in serving the communities and the initiatives that Makkah Mosque has undertaken under his leadership.

The Prince said: “I was fascinated to hear the views of Mr Qari Asim, the Imam of the Leeds Makkah Mosque, which incidentally has just won a national award for its community outreach work, on how, through a wide range of initiatives including Mosaic, Britain seeks to integrate rather than isolate its minority communities and offers real freedom of choice and of expression.

Mr Asim mentioned the practical example of the workplace, where multi-purpose faith rooms are increasingly in place to allow people to worship as part of their normal working day.

I have to say that it is this acceptance indeed, this welcome of diversity which makes me rather proud to be British!”

The Prince also met Under Secretary of State for Communities, Sadiq Khan, a Mosaic supporter. Mr Khan said: “I told The Prince that he is a friend of Islam and has been for years. “Muslims in Britain see him as our Prince. He is such a humble man he asked me if I thought what he was doing would make much of a difference to young Muslims. I told him of course it would.”
