On the 27th of Rajab every year, Muslims celebrate Al-Isra Wal Miraj, the Night Journey to the Heavens, event in which the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) travelled from Makkah to Jerusalem and from there he went beyond the seventh heaven until he reached the presence of Allah Almighty and witnessed the glorious countenance of the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
During the meeting between the Lord and His creation, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was given a number of “gifts” for his followers – Muslims.
To celebrate this miracolous night journey and to remind ourselves of the gifts that we were granted so that we can value those Divine gifts, the following programmes will be held at Makkah Mosque on the following dates:
1) Tuesday 28 June after Maghrib prayer (09:45pm)
2) Saturday 2 July after Zuhr prayer (2:30pm)
The events are open to all brothers and sisters. Talks will be given in Urdu and English.
Part of the objective of organizing such events is to encourage our youth, our sisters and elders to participate by reciting the glorious Quran, reading nasheeds and naats in praise of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and delivering shorts talks on Islam.

The 7th month of Islamic calendar, Rajab, is when Muslims start calculating their zakat payable. Muslims from the Indian subcontinent , Pakistan, traditionally give their zakat in the month of Rajab.
Many Muslims have a lot of questions about Zakah. In particular, usually they are unsure how Zakah principles apply to certain commonly held assets such as shares/investment properties, debts owed etc and consequently may be incorrectly calculating their Zakah liability. Consequently the workshop will also cover the fundamentals of Zakah.
The workshop will be held on Saturday 11th June 2011, 12-2pm at Makkah Masjid.
The workshop is open to both brothers and sisters and literature will be available to participants to take away at the end of the session. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
The workshop will be facilitated by Imam of Makkah Masjid, Qari Muhammad Asim.
The purpose of the workshop is to empower British Muslims with the information required to correctly discharge their Fasting & Zakah obligations.
The seminar is FREE but attendance is via REGISTRATION ONLY. Prior to the event, for the purposes of gender ratio, food, space and any changes so as to notify attendees, we would be grateful if those interested in the course could register by contacting us at mail@makkahmasjid.co.uk

Two revolutionary toolkits on how UK Mosques could better engage with young people and women is being launched on 8th May at a major national conference organised by the British Muslim Forum (BMF) in partnership with UK’s Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB) at Nawaab Banqueting Suite, Manchester.
The Toolkits contain key findings from a number of workshops held in mosques and Islamic centres across the country which explored reasons on the lack of participation of women and young people in British mosques as well as examples of best practices.
The Toolkits were devised by a young Imam, Qari Asim who is based at the Makkah Masjid in Leeds in his capacity as Chair of MINAB’s Youth Committee. Qari Asim said: “The workshops held throughout the country highlighted a number of powerful examples of mosques being sources of community harmony, cohesion and platforms for dialogue.”
“These two MINAB toolkits contain practical solutions, which if implemented, can go a long way in turning British Mosques into more inclusive and engaging local institutions whereby, they become centres of excellence and civic engagement for the benefit of all”, he said.
The Chair of MINAB, Maulana Shahid Raza OBE said: “The pastoral needs of young Muslims have considerably changed in the last 15 years and it is encouraging to see that an increasing numbers of British Mosques are providing extensive services to the Muslim community. The Muslim community must aspire to recreate the mosques as places buzzing with spiritual blessing and of care and compassion for men, women, young, old and people of other faiths in our communities.”
“A multi-functional mosque would be better placed to serve the increasingly complex needs of young Muslims and better equipped to guide the younger generations that might be wrestling with ideas and personalities;” he said.
Maulana Nisar Ahmed Baig, Chairman of the British Muslim Forum said: “We are delighted to have worked with the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board to launch this toolkit and disseminate it throughout the country for the benefit of all Mosques”.

The Royal wedding of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton is scheduled to take place at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.
The government has encouraged communities to organise street parties to celebrate this happy occasion.
Islam attaches great importance to marriage, with traditions stating that “marriage is half of the Deen”. In a hadith, the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) says:“Marriage is my way of living, whoever chose other than that is not one of mine.”
Every year hundreds of British Muslims get married and in Spring and Summer, there is hardly a weekend when someone we know is not getting married.
Many of our youngsters spend longer preparing for the wedding, as opposed to the married life ahead of them. Before getting married, many youngsters do not consider the challenges that a marriage throws up and how they can be resolved.
In order to understand the concept of marriage in Islam or the Art of Living Together, Leeds Makkah Masjid presents a seminar on “Introduction to Marriage”.
Marriage is about love, commitment, affection, mercy and hope, yet sometimes we struggle to find these elements in the lives of married people. Hence, we see many unhappy couples around us, such situation leading to break-ups many a times.
With divorce rates increasing and the importance of marriage decreasing, this course provides an opportunity to explore the true concept of marriage in Islam.
Topic: Introduction to Marriage
Date: Saturday 30 April 2011 at 3pm
Venue: Makkah Masjid 36 Thornville Road Leeds LS6 1JY
The seminar is FREE but attendance is via REGISTRATION ONLY. Prior to the event, for the purposes of gender ratio, food, space and any changes so as to notify attendees, we would be grateful if those interested in the course could register by contacting us at mail@makkahmasjid.co.uk

As part of Climate Week (21-27 March 2011), Makkah Mosque held an event on Sunday 27 March to raise awareness about Climate Change. The event was held in partnership with Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board. The purpose of the event was renew the ambition of the Muslim community to combat climate change and share many positive steps already being taken in communities across Britain.
Maulana Shahid Raza OBE Chairman of the MINAB said:
“Together we have to take responsibility and lead by example through action and ensure long-term and positive steps are made. Mosques across the UK will be marking climate week through sermons on Friday prayers and events. Mosques and Imams can play a unique role by increasing awareness about our duty to the environment and by putting into action the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle.”
Imam of Makkah Mosque, Qari Asim, gave a presentation on Islamic Perspective on Environment. He said that long before it became fashionable or ‘politically correct’ to care about the environment, the Qur’an and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encouraged Muslims to care for nature and other creation of God.
Long before it became fashionable or ‘politically correct’ to care about the environment, the Qur’an and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encouraged Muslims to care for nature and other creation of God.
Qari Asim, said: “The challenge that we human face is enormous. Man is effectively a trustee/guardian of the resources that are at his disposal. A trustee does not ‘kill’ those that are in his trust, does not destroy their homes, pollute carelessly with toxic wastes, and have deformities and diseases resulting from the careless and wasteful disposal of carcinogens. Rather a trustee takes every caution to protect the life, home and amenities that are enjoyed by those in his guardianship.”
At the event Leeds Met University also gave a presentation on how it has poineered sustainability. It is the first University in England to achieve ISO 14001 international standard for environmental managemnet. Leeds Met University’s objectives include:
Meet and, where appropriate, exceed the requirements of all relevant legislation, where no regulation exists, we’ll set our own standards informed by relevant codes of practice and guidelines and Re-use equipment where possible, increase recycling and promote the use of recycled materials in products and buildings.
Qari Asim has produced a leaflet to raise awareness which has been circulated by the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board to Mosques in the UK, and has called for Mosques to raise awareness through sermons, events, Madrassahs and community activities.
