Makkah Masjid has been running a series of workshops and seminars on the issue of marriage given the problems many families are facing when it comes to this issue.
Islam strongly encourages marriage, in fact the Prophet (peace be upon him) said “When a person gets married he has completed half of his religion, so let him fear Allah with regard to the other half.” [Bayhqi]
From this we can glean marriage is a strongly recommended Sunnah. Furthermore marriage can be a great tool of self improvement and is amongst the greatest blessings Allah can bestow on a person along with the creation of a family where taking care of that family is amongst the greatest acts of worship.
Throughout many cultures marriage has been traditionally arranged, however this has changed in the past 100 years and while many British Muslims are open to the notion of an arranged marriage, a suitable spouse is not always found. There are many who are frustrated at how difficult it is to meet Muslims with the result being youth who are left confused and discouraged about how to approach marriage while remaining within the Islamic boundaries.
Parents are also frustrated at the lack of options that are available to find a suitable match for their child.
A possible solution that provides an alternative option to parents and youngsters looking to get married is searching online. A recent study found 1 in 6 couples who got married in 2010 met on an internet matchmaking site.
With this in mind a new breed of Muslim matchmaking sites has been created, the most recent being ShariaMarriages.com. Sharia Marriages aims to maintain a Halal, Sharia compliant platform for the applicant along with family/friends to register in order to find a spouse in keeping with the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him ) words “Whoever believes in Allah and the last day, let him not have a private audience with a woman without her mahram.”[Ahmad]
In this way the site provides a modern approach to matchmaking while staying within the parameters of Islamic Sharia by bringing two people together to determine compatibility for marriage with the full awareness and support of their family. After registering with a family member/friend the applicant is required to fill in details about themselves along with a description of the type of spouse they are looking for. The website comes with messaging and instant chat features to allow communication along with stringent privacy and confidentiality settings.
We hope that this alternative method proves to be helpful to those parents looking for a spouse for their children.
